About the Rwandan Genocide
This genocide was between the Hutus and the Tutsis of the country Rwanda. The Hutus took up about 80 percent of the population in Rwanda and the Tutsis took up about 20 percent. The Tutsis were lighter skinned than the Hutus while there was also a Tutsi president before the Europeans came. When the Europeans came, the Belgians likes the tutsis better and easier to get along with. The Europeans thought that the Tutsis were much like themselves so they gave out identity cards. These cards separated the Hutus and the Tutsis. In the 1950s, the Hutus knew that they were the majority of Rwanda and took over the Tutsis. Then the Belgians "switched sides" and sided with the Hutus. Media took a role in this because the radio would call the Tutsis cockroaches and snakes, and tell the Hutus that they need to get rid of the Tutsis. This escalated to the radio stations telling the Hutus to go out and kill Tutsis. So, the Hutus did as they were told. In the streets Tutsis were stopped in their tracks and were killed with machetes or anything the Hutus could find. 800,000 Tutsis were killed in only 100 days while some barely survived.
Violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)
This genocide violates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is not only the Rwandan genocide, but every single genocide violates the UDHR. It violates the declaration in many ways and violates many articles. It violates article one and two, one is the right that we are all born free and equal and two is don't discriminate. This genocide violates both of the articles because the genocide separated both sides and made the Tutsis feel unequal to the Hutus just because the Hutus were the majority of the population. It violates article three as well because article three is the right to life. This article was violated 800,000 times in this genocide because of the 800,000 people who were killed. Many more articles such as articles thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, twenty two, twenty five, twenty eight and the most important is thirty. Article number thirty is the most important to respect and the biggest article was violated in this genocide. This is because article thirty is that no one can take away your rights. In this genocide the Hutus took away almost all of the Tutsis rights.
